Bruce Shear is an Independent Director and former CEO with extensive experience leading and growing behavioral healthcare systems. His expertise encompasses M&A due diligence, integrations, IPOs, strategic planning, operations, governance/compliance, finance, executive compensation, talent acquisition, and succession planning.

Currently, Bruce sits on the Board of Directors and is an investor for one of The Carlyle Group’s portfolio companies, Newport Academy. In this role, he advises this provider of rehabilitation centers for adolescents dealing with mental health and substance abuse issues on strategic planning, compliance, and succession planning initiatives. He is also a retained executive for subject matter expert advisory firms GLG-Gerson Lehrman Group, AlphaSights, and Coleman Research and he has completed more than 50 engagements, specifically related to acquisition strategy, operations, and HIPPA, Medicare, and facility compliance. Additionally, Bruce recently completed an engagement as Healthcare Operating Partner for Gemspring Capital, where he identified healthcare acquisition targets.

Previously, Bruce spent six years as the Executive Vice Chairman and Board Member for multinational behavioral healthcare provider Acadia Healthcare (NASDAQ: ACHC). He was appointed to this role following Acadia’s merger with his previous company, Pioneer Behavioral Health. Bruce was retained to advise on the integration strategy, as well as operations, finance, compliance, marketing, and executive compensation, during a period of exceptional growth from $300M to $3B in revenues.

As the Chairman, CEO, and President of Pioneer Behavioral Health (AMEX: PHC), an inpatient and outpatient provider of behavioral health services, Bruce created the growth and acquisition strategy that took the company from a small privately-held entity to a publically traded organization that was eventually merged with Acadia Healthcare. Over his 30-year career, he negotiated close to two dozen multimillion-dollar contracts with leading hospitals and psychiatric providers and repositioned the company from a provider within a hospital to a national network of standalone behavioral health providers. During his tenure, he also held board of director roles at Federation of Health Systems (FAHS) and National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems (NAPHS).

Bruce earned his MBA from Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts and his BA in Accounting & Management from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He lives in the West Palm Beach area of Florida with his wife, and he is the father of two grown children (a physician and a private equity executive).
